Why Is Defence Important In Boxing?

When most people think about boxing, their first point of reference tends to be the six basic punches. Fighters are judged by the number of punches they land, their knockout rate, and the accuracy of their shots. Yet, of equal importance is a boxer’s defensive strategy - their ability to react and evade oncoming attacks, to distance themselves appropriately, and to use defences to their advantage.
There are various defences that a boxer can use to deflect any one punch, but avoiding getting hit is just one factor to consider. By analysing your opponent’s style and dissecting their movements, you can select the defence that best allows you to set up your counterattack and stifle your opponent. Legendary defensive boxers such as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pernell Whitaker exemplify the effectiveness of a good defensive strategy, demonstrating that pulling back can also be a great opportunity for setting up an unexpected cross.
That’s why at Basic Reflex, defence training is an integral part of our sessions. Rather than sticking to static padwork, you will be challenged and stimulated with opportunities to use the defence and footwork skills you’ve acquired, as well as to sharpen your reflexes. Our drills and combinations are designed to help you develop your focus, your ability to analyse and strategise, and to mount effective counterattacks against your opponent. With enough practice (and a few smacks from the paddles), you’ll be able to anticipate, deflect, and counter whatever your opponent throws your way.
